Downward Turn

Once you have mastered the standard turn and are comfortable with the timing and maintaining line tension, one of the first alternative turns to learn is the 'Downward Turn'. It's very similar to the standard turn apart from the main fact that you will turn the kite downwards rather than upwards when turning. Note that a downward turn will produce much more power during the turn than a standard turn. There are two main reasons for doing a 'downward turn', one is that the wind may be pretty light for the kite and a downward turn keeps the kite nicely powered up through a turn, another is that you need to turn quickly, say in a race. As you turn the kite downward and around to face the opposite direction, you should already be turning the buggy to get ready for all that extra power. When the power kicks in it feels as if it almost drags the buggy round rather than the buggy turning normally. A great buzz but you have been warned!

Upwind turn

This turn takes a lot of practice and is best done when the wind is light to begin with. As you may have guessed this is exactly the same as a standard turn, except that the buggy is turned into the wind (upwind). Why would you use this turn? Well, in a standard turn the buggy loses ground down wind, but with this turn the buggy position is maintained and in fact should be improved from an upwind perspective. The key to this turn is making sure you get the kite up high so that you can lean back in the buggy and let the kite fly above you and also to make sure you have enough speed in the buggy to turn it upwind, as once you raise the kite it should be not giving any more power to you and the buggy until it has flown over your head to the other side. At the same time the buggy should be turned upwind using it's momentum to turn around to face the other way. This turn is a prime candidate for the buggier to end up going backwards especially if the buggy momentum was not enough to do a full turn! This one takes a lot of practice but can be a very handy maneuver to master especially for racing.
